I had no clue that so many actors have performed the role of Superman. Christopher Reeves is my favorite.

rjbatty, thanks a lot on your insightful evaluation. We write hoping for responses like this. I agree wholeheartedly along with your opinion regarding George Reeves. He was the best Clark of them all, and his Superman was calm and self-assured. If there was ever a Justice League film that might pluck actors out of any era, George Reeves would be the one I would most have wished to see interact with other actors/heroes.

Chris Reeve made the most convincing Superman from a bodily perspective. It is difficult to think about somebody wanting higher within the costume. He introduced a charm and honesty to the role and made it his own. The increasingly poor scripts were a disgrace.

Tom Welling grew nicely into the role on television, although his talents as an actor had been extra restricted. He all the time had an honest supporting cast to play off of (very similar to Dean Cain in the Lois and Clark collection), and it made for some good moments.

Brandon Routh was restricted by the material–it was unfair to ask him to easily be a Chris Reeve clone. I wish he could have had one other film to prove himself as a result of I believe he might have achieved a fine job.

You’re completely right–time erodes our memories and perceptions of those that got here first. I have had the same argument with basketball followers who declare Michael Jordan to be the best of all time, while older followers steadily go for Wilt Chamberlain. There are fewer of us round who remember George Reeves than there as soon as were, which is a shame. If solely he actually could be transplanted into the twenty first century, the place special effects could add the same marvel to his portrayal of the Man of Steel that it has to his successors.

Thanks again on your terrific response–I look ahead to updating this text after the following movie. Take care.

Mike: You’ll be able to notice one thing very obvious with your chart, i.e., the older actors who played Superman have obtained many less votes than the newer. With the passage of time, folks merely die or overlook or do not go surfing to HubPages, thus their vote is underneath-sampled. While your intentions are pure, the hope of discovering essentially the most admired Superman cannot assist however be skewed by time. The general public has the retention span of an insect. It would all the time discover the subsequent iteration to be the “greatest.” And that is unfair for a number of causes. Cinematography continues to improve, the flexibility of a studio to review demographics continues to enhance. Whereas one technology fades into oblivion, the next exerts the loudest voice. We’ve got a era at the moment that barely heard of Elvis Presley and even The Beatles — so how can we anticipate them to judge the roles of prior Supermen impartially? It just can’t be carried out. Speaking for myself, I am simply barely aware of the work Kirk Alyn did as Superman — so how can I fairly judge him among the many others? I am not saying that you purposely created a false survey, however, nicely, frankly, that is all it would ever find yourself being.

Secondly, I’m not making an attempt within the slightest to discourage you from building the sort of Hub you are feeling is most participating. I feel that the work you might have finished right here is great — far exceeding any article I’ve come throughout. So, I do know your intentions are good and sincere. I just have to remark that neither you nor I might derive at a “greatest” Superman because every Superman belongs to a selected age — and that age is advantaged/disadvantaged by its longevity.

I watched some but not all of “Lois and Clark” and hardly gave any discover to Dean Cain as a result of I could not tear my eyes off of Terri Hatcher. (Here is one other Hub you might attempt creating …) I discovered Hatcher to be the sexiest Lois and i principally had no want for a Superman to be in the sequence. Dean Cain simply seemed like, well, kind of a distraction.

Unlike everybody else on the planet, I discovered Kate Bosworth to even be a scene stealer in “Superman Returns,” although I nonetheless give high credit score to Brandon Routh (who I didn’t fully overlook).

The subsequent movie,”Superman: The Man of Steel,” will readjust our opinions — up or down, however the disagreement will go on until the older generations merely stop voting because they’re all useless. If I have been alive in the course of the thirties when Superman first arrived in all his colorful glory — and if I were to be shown a costume to be worn by Henry Cavill vs. what I noticed within the comics, I do not think there can be a lot argument about which was the superior design. The design that fit thirties America evidently is not the same design that matches the early twenty first Century. And I’m positive when i see Amy Adams on the screen as Lois, I will instantly neglect any of her progenitors.

For me George Reeves personified Superman — despite the low price range and the whole lot else. Why? As a result of he was probably the most mature of the lot. The scripts by no means obtained a lot in the way of whether or not he was torn between being Superman or Clark Kent. No. He carried out each roles with out conflict. He was always regular, assured. The concept of marrying Lois would have seemed ludicrous. Reeves (regardless of what we read) got here throughout as a protecting, loving and gentle Superman — one who was did not endure from identification battle and maintained a self-assurance that none of his predecessors have been able to master (or given the chance to grasp).

I believed it was a raw deal that Christopher Reeve confronted one image after one other with a diminishing budget and cast. I thought it was a uncooked deal that Brandon Routh did not get an opportunity to show himself with out being hamstrung as a Christopher Reeve clone. The movie biz is ruthless, that’s for certain.

I hope the Henry Cavill Superman will knock our socks off, however I’ll always have emotional feelings for the actors who got here earlier than. In America, who will get to play the next Superman is of higher importance than who performs the following Hamlet.

rjbatty, thanks to your feedback. Ultimately you are appropriate–the order is all a matter of opinion, and the poll at the bottom of the hub displays that to a large degree. I will do an update once the new Superman comes out, however I feel it’s only applicable to attend. I can’t assist however surprise how you would price the actors. If you’re of a thoughts to, cease by once more and let me know. Till then, thanks again.

Interesting Hub. I don’t agree along with your specific order, but that is okay. It is all a matter of opinion, I suppose. You may wish to do an replace re. the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel (though none of us have seen it as of this date).

Thanks, Fanboy. Chris Reeve was my favorite of all the actors to play Superman, as nicely.

I admire your stopping by.

Hey Mike, incredible hub. I love Superman, and Christopher Reeve is my all-time favorite actor within the function.

AuthorMike Lickteig 6 years in the past from Lawrence KS USA

Trusouldj, thanks for your comments. While I was a bit exhausting on the Superboy sequence and the actors who played the function, I appreciated the present and appreciated the work Newton and Christopher did. I always believed they would have carried out higher with higher scripts, but I at all times felt their place in the historical past of Superman is justified. Their show was certainly, “Smallville earlier than there was Smallville”.

trusouldj 6 years ago from Indiana

Thanks for together with Newton and Christopher from the Superboy series. This present was the original Smallville, however was pushed off the air in favor of developing Lois and Clark. In reality, one of many Superboy actors auditioned and was favored for the Dean Cain role till they realized he’d in been in the costume before.

Surlyoldcat, thank you for mentioning that Superman made his first look in 1938. I had not seen my error and that i admire the correction. I’ll notice it immediately, and i thank you again. I remember the outdated costumes, also. A pal of mine had a Batman costume that he simply treasured. I had a Superman costume when I was younger, as effectively.

Thanks in your feedback, and for noticing my error. I recognize it an awesome deal.

surlyoldcat 7 years ago

I hate to be the bee within the bonnet, however superman debuted in 1938, not 1939. That was the year Batman appeared in Detective Comics.

However that’s simply litle nitpick, this article kicked A….uhm…backside. WHat an important hub for around this time of year. Remember the previous vynil costumes? I had Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and wore all of them till they had been rendered competely useless.

Thanks for stirring up those reminiscences. I’ll relish this always.

Sjk6101983, thanks for stopping by. I never noticed ‘Hollywoodland’ however will see if I can give it a glance sometime. It sounds intriguing–George Reeves had an interesting life and profession. Thanks very much for the suggestion.

sjk6101983 7 years ago from Milwaukee, WI

Did anybody ever see “Hollywoodland” where Ben Affleck played George Reeves? Any Superman fan should watch that film. I’m not into the entire superhero scene actually myself – I simply love outdated Hollywood motion pictures – and i loved the story behind this movie.

Hey, Tom. Channel 50 had Superman Returns on tonight, so I acquired to see a few of it again before sitting down here. It didn’t change anything. Routh was sadly doomed to imitate Chris Reeve. It virtually seemed that was what they expected of Kevin Spacey while selecting up the place Gene Hackman left off, however Spacey had the expertise to make the position his own. (Who was better as Luthor, Hackman or Spacey? Do not reply too rapidly…)

I preferred Superman Returns, however forgot how a lot they imitated the primary Superman movie. If we were to imagine that Superman Returns picks up five years or so after Superman (or Superman II) left off, would Superman and Lois actually be repeating issues they stated to one another up to now??????

Nicely, thanks for stopping by, and it is a legitimate question–who was higher as Luthor?

Sure. It will need to have been fairly a scary task to method the function of Superman when you have got the performance of Reeves continuously wanting over your shoulder. It could be like somebody trying to tug-off a redo of “Citizen Kane”–or for readers unfamiliar with something that occurred earlier than the yeqar 2000–somebody making an attempt to do The Joker again, with Heath Ledger’s maniacal chortle continually ringing in your ears. Query: they managed to honor Ledger with an Oscar (although, alas, he needed to die to get it), why could not they’ve given one to Reeves? Answer: As a result of Oscar is simply allowed to get it proper 25% of the time. Or so it would seem.

Hi, Tom! Feels like we are in settlement about Reeve, at the least, if not Catwoman. Chris Reeve was born to play Superman, and in a method it is straightforward to grasp why they tried so arduous to get Brandon Routh to look and act like Reeve. If you can’t high his efficiency, you mimic it, I guess. The Superman film was what super-hero films were purported to be like, and it proved you would get it proper, blazing the trail for Howard the Duck and his contemporaries. It was certainly a disgrace that they could not produce better sequels. The second movie was honest, but Richard Pryor as a hapless adversary within the third film was not a good suggestion, even if Pryor was a relatively hot display presence at the time. And the fourth film is not even price mentioning….

The story is that the intent is to make another Superman film, however related in (dark) type to the latest Batman offerings. I hope not–Superman and Batman lend themselves to different types of storytelling, and it can be the flawed type for Superman. We shall see, I suppose.

Nicely, take care.

Unlike your article about the varied Catwoman actresses, I agree with you 100% right here, although if I’d tackled the topic, I’d have made it clear there was a wide gulf between 1st and 2nd place. Of all the performances of every tremendous-hero film ever made, Christopher Reeve gave the only best efficiency of all–not counting Heath Ledger’s because the Joker which belongs in a universe all its own. He was capable of carry absolute sincerity to the function, all the while sustaining a twinkle in his eye–a balancing act that only a few actors could have pulled off. Add to this his physical beauty, the not too long ago pumped-up physique perfectly suited to the position, and a comedian deftness which brought hilarity to his portrayal of Clark Kent and you have an ideal storm of display presence and performing means. It’s too unhealthy they weren’t able to provide higher scripts for the sequels. Cheers!

Habee, thanks for stopping by. Chris Reeve was my favorite, also.

Holle Abee 7 years ago from Georgia

Great hub! I needed to go together with Reeve.

WeakvsFire, thanks for reading. I liked Chris Reeves the best additionally. Your comment about darker heroes is useless on–I read someplace that the rationale another Superman film wasn’t made was as a result of the success of the Batman flicks made producers look for ways to supply a “darker” Superman. A foul thought, in my view; Superman doesn’t lend itself to the identical type of storytelling.

I very much approve of the job Tom Welling has performed on Smallville. You are right concerning the scripts from the previous few seasons. I believe the show suffered from the lack of the actor playing Lex Luthor–with out Superman’s main nemesis, the show has lost a few of its focus. Green Arrow appears to be the star as a lot as Clark/Superman, and that i also struggle a bit with the choice to make small town geek Chloe into a super-spy. I do like the appearance of the other heroes–the Justice Society, the Legion of Super-Heroes, Martian Manhunter, and many others. I’m wondering what it would take to get an look from a younger Bruce Wayne??

Effectively, thanks once more on your comments, they’re vastly appreciated!

WeakvsFire 7 years ago

I’m additionally principally partial to Christopher Reeves. All the time thought he portrayed Superman best as the final word boy scout but nonetheless likable. I say nonetheless as a result of being completely good in every means could come off as actually annoying (cough Mary Poppins). Goodness knows it’s harder now to do adaptations since having heroes folks can identify with or heroes with a bit of a dark side are extra in. That’s why I also have to give it up for Tom Welling for doing a good job in Smallville…though I’m concerned with a number of the writing in the previous few seasons.

Hello, Sabreblade. You already know, you’re proper about George Reeves. He did have a certain smug look about him that the opposite actors who portrayed Superman by no means did. Just a tiny little smile that made you suppose he didn’t take any of it too severely (as Superman and as an actor enjoying him). And, if you give it some thought, you most likely could be a little cocky if crooks tried to shoot at you time and again.

Thanks again for studying, Sabreblade. Hope you have got a fantastic weekend.

sabrebIade 7 years ago from Pennsylvania

Oh course I liked Chris Reeve, but did you even discover that George Reeves generally made Superman kinda cocky? I imply he was a very good guy and all, but typically he regarded at the bad guys like he was thinking “Oh please.” Usually after the millionth time some idiot shot at him. Appears like somebody would have told the crooks, “Guns don’t WORK on him!”

Andy, thanks for reading. I at all times thought it was a shame that “Superman Returns” appeared so much a tribute to Chris Reeve and his portrayal. I by no means thought the film gave Routh an opportunity to show what he might do. You’re proper, there was a little bit of Smallville to the film that did not serve Routh nicely, either. I read that Routh hopes to play the Man of Steel again, but one other movie has been held up by the need to make Superman motion pictures darker in theme and scope, as has been completed with the Batman movies.

On condition that, I wouldn’t thoughts seeing Routh given one other likelihood with some fresh writing that does not draw from the previous films a lot. We’ll see, I assume.

Thanks once more for your comments.

That was fairly enlightening as past the plain 6 I used to be unaware of the 80 Tv series with John Haymes Newton and Gerard Christopher. Personally I would have putt Dean Cain above Tom Welling and Brandon Routh all the way down to Men’s Custom Han Solo Sticker Smule Grande Short Sleeve Tops Tees sixth. For me Routh model tried to seize Reeve model however then at the same time deliver a bit of mallville to it and as such didn work. But then I doubt anyone will ever surpass Christopher Reeve performance as Superman.

Amez, thanks for visiting and leaving a remark. George Reeves was the Superman I knew as a kid, and i always admired how down-to-earth and affordable he seemed. It was a very enjoyable show to observe.

Nice Topic to build a Hub round, I actually appreciated George Reeves, most likely as a result of thats when I really watch it on Television. I appreciate your analysis, was good to see all of them collectively and learn alittle about who they were indiviually.

rml, I like Tom Welling additionally. One of many good things a few television sequence, particularly a series that has run for 8+ years, is that you’ve an opportunity to develop the character and make it your personal. Welling has carried out that fairly properly (no pun intended), and that i give him credit score for the work he has executed on the series.

Thanks for your comment.

The concept of using great powers in behalf of democracy was never more evident than the tv tag line, citing a “never-ending battle for reality, justice and the American manner”. In that era the three have been seemingly synonymous, and the thought caught on as heroes like Captain America and the Human Torch duked it out with Hitler and the Nazis during World Conflict II.

Thanks on your comments, Invoice. They are much appreciated.

A positive job of research. In the early sixties a critic named Seymour Krim did an essay on the political significance of the Superman character and determined that the unique comedian-book character was an inversion of the Nietzschean “Ubermensch” stereotype into the common man using such powers in behalf of democracy, not fascism, as within the case of different such heroes (notably Flash Gordon).

The same democratic critique was later used to compliment “Star Trek.”

BTW, as you most likely know, George Reeves seems in the first scene of “Gone With the Wind” as one in every of Scarlett O’Hara’s suitors. Invoice
